So What is a rodent ?
A rodent is a mammal belonging to the order Rodentia, characterized by:

• Constantly Growing Incisors: Their most prominent feature is a single pair of continuously growing incisors in both the upper and lower jaws. These sharp teeth, derived from the Latin word "rodere" meaning "to gnaw," are essential for their lifestyle. They use them for gnawing on food, digging burrows, and even defending themselves.

• Examples: Rodents come in a vast array of sizes. We have familiar creatures like rats and mice, but the order also includes squirrels, chipmunks, hamsters, guinea pigs, porcupines, beavers, capybaras, and many more!

Rodents are the superstars of the mammal world, making up a whopping 40% of all mammal species! Here's a breakdown of what makes them tick:

• Gnawing Champs: Their name comes from the Latin word "rodere," which means "to gnaw." The key feature of a rodent is their constantly growing incisors (the prominent front teeth) in both the upper and lower jaws. These sharp incisors are perfect for gnawing on food, digging burrows, and even defending themselves.

• Size Matters (Not Always): Rodents come in all shapes and sizes! You've got the teeny tiny Etruscan shrew, weighing a mere 2 grams, and the behemoth capybara, tipping the scales at a whopping 65 kg. Most rodents, however, fall somewhere in between, with robust bodies, short limbs, and often, long tails.

• Global (Almost) Domination: Forget world domination, rodents have practically achieved it! They're native to every major landmass except for Antarctica, New Zealand, and a few isolated islands. Humans, however, have unwittingly helped them colonize some of these places too.

• Dietary Delights: While most rodents are herbivores, munching on seeds, fruits, and veggies, there's more to their menu than meets the eye. Some are omnivores, enjoying a bit of animal protein alongside their plants. And believe it or not, there are even specialist rodent predators out there!

• Homespun Havens: Rodents are resourceful burrowers, creating intricate tunnels and dens underground. This keeps them safe from predators and helps them regulate their temperature. Some species, however, prefer a more open-air lifestyle, living in trees or even building nests.

• Night Owls and Early Birds: When it comes to activity times, rodents are all over the map. Some are nocturnal, preferring the cloak of darkness for their adventures. Others are diurnal, bustling about during the day. And there are even some that are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk.

• Family First: Rodents are social creatures, often living in groups or colonies. They're generally good parents, raising their young in cleverly built nests and providing them with care until they're independent.

• Economic Impact: Rodents play a crucial role in ecosystems. They disperse seeds, pollinate plants, and serve as prey for many larger animals. However, some rodent species can become pests, damaging crops and property.
